Our goal for our 2025 project was to evaluate affordability metrics and identify issues in affordable housing in Fauquier County.
Affordable housing remains a complex issue in Fauquier County, where rising costs and limited inventory present challenges for workforce retention and community stability. While federal guidelines define affordability as housing costs at or below 30% of gross income, including utilities, this standard does not always align with the lived financial realities of local households. Our research explored affordability based on net income, debt-to-income rations, and regional economic conditions. Deeper analysis is needed to determine whether available housing aligns with income distribution and workforce needs. An innovative, outside-the-box approach will be necessary to ensure accessible and sustainable housing solutions for local workers, young professionals, and aging residents.
We compiled research and information that can be shared with community leaders and decision-makers to equip them with data-driven insights for policy development. Next steps will include collaboration between local government, nonprofits and housing assistance programs, employers, developers, investors, and community members. This video illustrates our findings and starts the conversation.
